Modem Off-Line

Please note most instructions are based on user having a Motorola Surfboard Modem. Other modems have different light configurations. For troubleshooting consult your modem owners manual.

Reset your Modem (Reboot):
If you have a blinking 'receive' or 'send', try rebooting the modem by disconnecting the power on the modem. Your modem should have several lights, a power light, a receive, a send, an online, and a activity light. When modems are connected correctly they will have four green solid lights. Then one blinking activity light.

Reboot your Computer:
Exit all programs and shutdown your computer, wait momentarily and then restart.

Check All Connections:
Make sure coaxial cable is connected snugly to the back of your modem and to wall faceplate (don't overtighten), Check that the ethernet or USB cable is securely connected to both modem and back of computer, and finally check that the power cord is plugged into the modem and the wall outlet.

Check TV Reception:
If you have a snowy signal, Chambers Cable may be experiencing a plant issue that is effecting your cable modem's ability to get online.

Be Available to Troubleshoot:

If you need assistance from our Helpdesk via telephone, remember to always call from home. Have a telephone near your computer so we can walk you through steps to help troubleshoot and repair your problems.

Slow Speeds

Summary
Slow speeds can be caused by bad network cards, bad ethernet cable, poorly functioning computers or poor cable line conditions. Poor speed can also be caused by viruses, adware or spyware. To test your speeds, find a reliable speed test web site and run speed tests. Also remember that bytes is different from bits. The Internet works in bits.

Make sure your windows updates are done and scan for spyware and adware.

Firewalls (General Education)

Summary
There are basically 2 types of firewalls:
Software or Hardware. Some software versions are Norton, MCAFEE, Zone Alarm and Black ICE. Hardware versions are usually in the form of a router, which will act as a firewall device and a hub for multiple computers. Firewalls take a public IP address and translate it into a private IP address. By making this transition, the firewall protects the internal network from outside access. This is also know as NAT (network address translation). The device can then be further configured to allow access into the network IE: Internet, Email, or VPN.

Steps
Firewalls can be configured to work with your cable modem connection, however, please be aware that Chambers Cable does not support firewalls. If you have any issues after installing a firewall, Chambers Cable will recommend the following options:

  1. Uninstall the firewall.
  2. Contact the firewall vendor or place of purchase

Firewall - Windows XP Disabling

Summary
Windows XP comes with built-in firewall software that is turned off by default when you create a network connection. Firewalls are designed to protect your computer by closing unnecessary network openings, or ports, on your system that hackers or viruses might use to enter your system. However, some programs need to use these openings in order to work properly. If you install any software that uses the Internet that doesn't seem to be working, check to see if a firewall is turned on.

Steps
To turn off the Windows XP firewall, do the following:

  1. Click on the Start button, choose All Programs, then choose Connect To and then Show all connections.
  2. Right-click on the icon for your Internet connection and choose Properties from the pop-up window.
  3. In the window that appears, click on the advanced tab and uncheck Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet.
  4. Click the OK button. You have now turned off the firewall.
